Birthday Cards and Sock Drawers. Who Would Have Thought?

Yes. It is indeed Sweet Tea’s birthday. She has turned 29. Again, for the third time, mind you. :)

I have been trying to come up with little ideas of what to give her on such an occasion over the past few weeks. After all, she is my wife. And I love her. And birthdays, even at this point in one's life, are still a special day. If only to celebrate the event that has led one to mark off another year on the calendar as having graced the world with their presence. But to find something to bestow upon my wonderful spouse to show I care has been something that has somewhat eluded me lately…….

I had found, whilst making a trek to the Evil Empire a few days back during one of my lunch breaks, the old fall back to any event that deems it necessary to give gifts of some sort: a birthday card. And I found one. The PERFECT card for my lovely wife. One I felt that was made just for her.

Knowing her love of pink flamingoes (the card had a flamingo ordained in flashy party attire), her crazy stint at being somewhat of a party goer herself at one time in her life, and having the words within the folds of the card mentioning the words “beautiful” and “eye candy”, I felt this particular card appropriate to give ‘ol Sweet Tea for “her day”. She is in fact quite the attractive one. *grin* Even if telling her gets me that little roll of the eyes and the adamant “shut the fuck up” reaction she always gives me. And the fact that her nickname is “Candy” made the card even that more of a no brainer……

Alas, I had held off buying it for another time. As fate would have it, while meandering amongst the aisles at Wally World last night, we just happened to take a short cut through the card aisle on our way to our eventual goal; the kitty litter. And wouldn’t you know it? The pink flamingo literally jumped out at her and said “Hey! Read me!”. Actually, Casandra is quite an observant individual who takes in everything around her. So in reality she simply saw the flamingo and began reading. Much to my dismay.

I told her this was the card I had intended on buying her. Casandra told me simply: “You're right, it is the perfect card. Now save your money. I’ve already read it”. Thus my attempts, at least in part, were thwarted to find at least something I could give as a show of my endearing affection to my wife who had just turned another year older. But she did bestow upon me a kiss and thanked me for the thought of the card.

What to do?

It appears that Casandra is one of those women who is more in touch with reality than most. Cards, flowers, a night out for a little dinner with just the two of us: these are petty attempts at doing the same ol' same ol' that most men fall back on in circumstances such as birthdays. I was still at a loss at what to do…..

I have used the term “sui generis” (Def: of her, his, its, or their own kind; unique) to describe Sweet Tea from time to time. And she is definitely the type of women who follows the beat of a different drum. It seems PVC pipe to make her own soap molds, a little alone time at the grocery store, and matching up socks and tucking them neatly in her dresser drawer was all I really needed to do for the woman. Or at least in part.

Perhaps some grilled hamburgers and corn on the cob for her birthday dinner? Oh…of course. That is where she is as I type this little blog.

Grocery shopping.

Other men should be so lucky as to have a wife like mine. It’s the simplest of gestures that please her.

Happy Birthday, my love.
